David Boon

David Clarence Boon (b 1960), cricketer, was the first Tasmanian player to become an automatic choice in the Australian national team. Born in Launceston, he gained early prominence as a schoolboy cricketer. He first played for the Tasmanian senior team in 1978–79, and soon established himself as a regular first-class player. Short in stature, but thickset and possessing an impressive array of powerful shots, he won Australian selection in the one-day team in 1983–84, and his Test debut followed a season later.

Boon was a pivotal member of the Australian resurgence as a world cricket power in the late 1980s and 1990s, batting with dependability and courage in the top order in 107 Test matches and 181 One Day Internationals. He retired from international cricket in 1996, later becoming an Australian selector.
