They will be discussing “The First Hour” of a cricket match from both multi day and limited over perspectives. “The First Hour” of any cricket match is vital.

WHY DO YOU SHINE THE BALL?

When you are a pace bowler, and you want the ball to swing, according the theories of aerodynamics, there must be one side of the ball that is shinier, or smoother, than the other side.

We have already had a bit of a look at the principles of how cricket balls swing. It is important to remember that the “shiny” side is the side that permits the air to flow around it more easily than the rough side, and therefore, it is the whole of the shiny side that needs to be worked on for it to swing most effectively.

WHAT DO YOU SHINE?

It might sound silly to ask this question, but believe it or not, the majority of bowlers do not shine the proper parts of the ball.

Most bowlers will shine the side of the ball that is chosen to be the shiny side, but only the major part of that side of the ball.

For the ball to swing effectively, the whole side of the ball, including the leather right up to the stitches, must be shined and polished.

HOW DO YOU SHINE THE BALL?

Typically, shining the ball is done with either sweat, or saliva. These two forms of moisture are rubbed into the ball using the fingers, and then the ball is polished on part of the bowler’s clothes.

It is not unusual to see bowlers with a red patch on their trousers, just next to their groin, as this indentation that is made between
the leg and the groin provides for a good place to rub the ball to polish it.

Some bowlers will gather sweat from their forehead, neck, underarms, or even the small of their back. Just remember though, you must
not use any other substance to assist in polishing the ball. This includes the use of sunscreen, so be very careful that if you are gathering sweat from your forehead or neck area, that there are no large amounts of sunscreen that are being applied to the ball as well.

The Umpires, and indeed the batsmen, will be very keen to see you stop shining the ball if it is found that you are using remaining bits of sunscreen that have not been absorbed into the skin to assist you in getting a good shine on the ball.

KEY POINTS

Hands together. V’s pointing down the back of the bat between the splice and the leading edge.
The basic recommended grip for players is best described by laying the bat face down on the ground with the handle pointing towards the player. Ask the batter to pick up the bat with both hands about the middle of the handle. The natural position of the hands should form two “V’s” formed by the thumbs and forefinger pointing down the back of the bat between the splice and the leading edge of the bat.

The distance that the hands are apart on the handle is a fairly personal thing, but generally, it should enable the player to have the bat well balanced for playing shots, both defensive and attacking.

If the hands are too close together on the handle, there is the chance that you may lose a little control over shots such as the cut and the pull shot. Having the bottom hand down the handle a little way may also be helpful in facing pace.

The grip is so important because it determines everything that you do with the bat.

If you leave some space between the hands, it does allow you a little bit more control of the bat with the bottom hand. If the top and bottom hands are too close together, then control will be limited.

Having the bottom hands further down the handle also assists in facing fast bowling, because it gives you that extra bit of control.

The top hand, though, should be toward the top of the handle, because it is widely believed that this gives you ultimate leverage, which assists timing and driving the ball.

Low grip means you may have good control over defensive shots and shots behind the wicket, but will mean that perhaps driving will be made more difficult. This limits the leverage of the bat in the hands.

High grip will probably mean that the driving shots are easier to play, but may result in more snicks, a high backlift and flourishing shots.

Head is directly over the middle distance
between the feet.

Once you have taken your guard, stand with your feet shoulder width
apart, on either side of the popping crease. The popping crease
should split the distance between your feet. That is, there should
be the same distance between each foot and the popping crease. Once
you have this distance worked out, stand with your toes on the line
that you marked when you took your guard from the umpire.

Step Two – Flex Your Knees

Having your knees flexed means having them slightly bent, and ready
to move into action like a coiled spring — allowing your legs
to move whichever way you need to go to get to the ball. The other
thing that will help you get your knees flexed and ready to move
is to ensure that your weight is predominantly on the balls of your
feet. This is why people say that Don Bradman was such a great batter.
Bradman was a ballroom dancer, so being on the balls of his feet
from dancing was almost second nature to him. Being on the balls
of your feet gives you a greater chance of being able to move when
you need to — boxers also do this.

Step Three — Head Level and Eyes Straight

Chin is directly

over the toes

Your eyes need to be level, so make sure that your head is not
on a tilt or a lean. This will ensure that you have the best possible
view of the ball as it is being bowled to you, and help you judge
the line and length, which we’ll talk about later.

Your chin should be above the toes from front on and, and midway
between the feet from side on in order to keep the centre of gravity
over the base of support, which is the feet. This will ultimately
assist in maintaining your balance.

If the head is over too far toward the offside, the body will tend
to fall that way when playing offside shots, and it will be difficult
to maintain balance for leg side shots.

Step Four — Check the Symmetry

Your toes and hips should line up straight down the wicket towards
the bowler. This puts your body into a side on position, which should
be maintained for nearly every shot.

Keeping your front shoulder slightly open enables a more comfortable
stance and helps to eliminate the blind spots on the leg side.

The bottom of the bat should rest against the little toe of the
back foot, and the top hand should lightly rest on the inside of
the front thigh.
