- He developed the New Zealand test team into a competitive test and one day unit until he resigned in September 1999.
- He played a huge part in developing Michael Slater, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh, Mark Taylor, Michael Bevan and Glen McGrath into regular members of the test lineup.
- And, people do not realise that during the 1985-86 and 1986-87 he was the spin bowling coach for Trevor Hohns. When Trevor Hohns signed on for the 2 rebel tours, he was an average leg spin bowler. With Steve Rixon as the major wicketkeeper in the rebel team, he gave Trevor Hohns the encouragement to bowl leg spinners in a confident manner. Brian Close labelled Trevor Hohns as the best leg spinner in the world during the 1986-87 Australian Rebel Tour of South Africa. Do you remember the Flipper Trevor Hohns bowled to David Gower during the all important 4th test match in 1989?
- He plucked a young Daniel Vettori from nowhere in 1996 and he is the best left arm off spinner in the world.
- And, Steve Rixon knows how to relate to people. He calls a spade a spade and he is an excellent teacher in the game of cricket.
- Finally, when Steve Rixon was the coach of NSW, you always had a funny feeling that the NSW team would become a formiddable and competitive unit under his coaching and tutleage.
